And not exactly to do with printmaking. Last week 5 of us were in the upstairs print room at Morley after one of the other artists had low blood sugar and had mentioned it to Richard, our tutor. I mentioned that I always have glucose on me as I am also diabetic, when another of us also said she was diabetic and then another. Four of us in the room had diabetes, three with type 1, and one with type2. It seems rather too much of a coincidence, and I’m now wondering if there is something about the condition which makes us create.

It also reminds of me of a woman who came up to me when I was showing my paintings at the Dulwich festival a few years ago. She was staring at one of my paintings called The Internal Examination, and just said right out “That picture really makes me think of my diabetes”. I was taken aback, and we had a conversation about our condition. While I felt this was more of a psychological image about self-analysis, I was stunned that it provoked such a specific response.
