The man in his boat from my linocut Cast Adrift has been at sea for quite some years now, and has managed to pick up some oars along the way.
I’ve been continuing his journey this year following my post In December 2025 about my work on this series up until then.
in 2019 he set out on his travels to London Print Studio in a show titled Journeys from the Printmakers Council. He was carried from the shore of 1948, specifically inspired by John Minton’s figure from the dust jacket of Time Was Away, a travel book about Corsica written by Alan Ross and famously illustrated by Minton.
His first stop this year was on Love Island. It’s quite a neoromantic romantic place full of potential for a guy rowing in from months at sea.
The Rapa Nui head seen on the island led to The Island of Sculptors, which includes some of my favourite sculptures in one landscape.

Following his trip to the Island of Sculptors, the next linocut isle is An Insular Life, an island to be inspired on, weaving nature to make living sculptures. This one is really about being creative in your tucked away private place, so in a way it’s a picture of the studio from my mind.
With all the heat this year and its consequential environmental stresses , the final island is A Place to Hide…a refuge inside the mind…
The journey will continue…I’m quite enjoying just letting my mind wander with these.
There is no preparatory work – I’m drawing straight onto the lino in pencil and seeing the image emerge organically in front of me. It’s always been my preferred way of working, rather than making a picture from observation or a photograph.
