Otford
3 plate linocut
Edition of 75
Image 40x30cm
Printed on Somerset velvet 300gm
This linocut has a nod to Edward Bawden's duck from his Kew Gardens London Transport Poster from 1936. At the centre of Otford is the famous roundabout with a duck house and pond. The village also has a model solar system, which I've incorporated into the ripples of the pond. Percy Pilcher and his sister Ella flew their prototype plane above the village in the 1890s and you can see a model in the heritage centre in the village. It seemed appropriate to include the spitfire here that flies around the valley, as Pilcher would have been the acknowledged inventor of motorised flight if he hadn't died in 1899 before his new plane was tested. What remains of the 16thC Bishop's Palace, originally the size of Hampton Court, is shown on the right, with St Bartholomew's Church on the left.
